Peregrinus goes into HAVEN

HAVEN settles into three rival powers. Peregrinus, head of the government's Limbo office, volunteers to go in as a spy, claiming he holds something over Sultan. He rises fast in the Witches' Council and meets Sultan himself.

Sultan seals off HAVEN

The First People's spy upsets the balance between the groups and Sultan comes out on top. When the government demands that HAVEN fulfil its duties as a district, Sultan insists on independence and closes HAVEN off on his own.

Both official pages put the blockade in the 222 paragraph without a date of its own, before Haven's construction in 240. A fan sandbox also dates Neon's blockade to 222 and says the Akashic Society's activity began to fall then.

The Rainbow War begins

Sultan renames HAVEN to Neon. The government calls him a terrorist and attacks. The Witches' Council strikes the sea lanes and war spreads to Atlas.

Peregrinus visits: ten more years of war

Peregrinus, Neon's number two and a member of the Witches' Council, comes to the studio for a tool; in his log Gino calls her the old government's proxy, a warmonger and a double-dealer of unknown loyalty. She says the Rainbow War will last until Haven is fully built, which Gino reckons is at least ten more years. Gino tells Hepo that Limbos change their looks with their hearts, and that the heart, like memory metal, always returns to its starting point; Peregrinus agrees, though her own starting point is a secret Gino has not solved in centuries.

Peregrinus rescues the stray Yiluo

On Tower date 243/01/20, Peregrinus's flight recorder logs that near the small body psyche-327, far out from Atlas, Alpa, the automatic messenger of a Whim Department patrol ship, wakes Yiluo of planet Aguya, who has drifted six hundred light years off course. Peregrinus privately calls Gino at the Mobius studio to say the ROTAENO subspace is growing unstable, and Gino sends a 'tracking anti-whim missile'; she fits a correction device to send Yiluo back on course. When Yiluo asks where Hepo went next, Peregrinus says: 'She will be waiting for you at the end.'

The Witches' Council breaks up the Fengbo Day parade and the Bufeng shut their gate

In the fan story Chiluan Tears, the Fengbo Day parade in Iris is ordered to disperse by the Witches' Council, shots ring out and the crowd panics; back in their compound the Bufeng close the gate that had never been shut. An says Fanna, the elders in the Rainbow Church leadership and the clansmen abroad will not return. The gate stays shut for five years.

The page also says that during the Rainbow War Peregrinus gathered the Witches' Council to turn many Rainbow Church members and the Bufeng were driven underground, which fits this scene.

The Mirrors in Mirror

The Mirrors in Mirror shows “the mirror of the mirror”; stolen again and again, it turns up in a nearby junk shop every fourteen days, with only an eagle feather left behind. Two unnamed speakers argue about giving “that guy” the mirror and sending it to a place on the fourth floor “we designed together”; one says Cronos agreed and that “he” can make himself a fulcrum, because “his name is already gone”.

Riddle 00096: writing that must come true

The Riddle Depository asks: if what a person writes must come true, is that person a prophet or a dangerous manipulator of causality? Broken Data Research's A and B wonder why they keep fishing up verifiable past conversations; B suggests monkeys at typewriters, or a misalignment in time. In another log a jeered-at “crazy old woman” hunts for her notebook, which reads “a magician was deceived, and turned himself into a pigeon”.

The Sultan side collapses: the Bufeng compound burns and the Moxier'gan front breaks

In the fan story Chiluan Tears, Fang Hanzhong runs back to Iris on 09/16 with the news that the Rainbow Church and Sultan have lost and that the Witches' Council and the Unified Government mean to wipe the Bufeng out; the next day's news reports a fire at the Bufeng site and no survivors found so far. On 09/17 the command at the Moxier'gan plateau in Lavabo breaks and the chief commander Liangyou is mortally wounded; in the story on the Liulingshui page, the medic Quewen survives the ruined battlefield and wakes on a train taking prisoners back to Neon. Sunset Clearing likewise says the Bufeng sect was probably wiped out by the Unified Government in 256.

Span 09/16 to 09/17, earliest date used. Dates come from the vignette headers on Chiluan Tears and the story timestamps 256/09/17 16:34:15 and 22:08:40 on the Liulingshui page. The Chiluan Tears history puts the end of the war on 09/23, a week later; Sunset Clearing gives only the year 256.

The Rainbow War ends; the Guru is born

Peregrinus betrays Sultan just as he is winning, leaving the prophecy that victory belongs to no one. Sultan is captured and thrown into Mazarine along with the Tube Maze. Neon returns to the government and becomes a prison for whims, guarded by a whim, the Guru (尊师古卢).

The arcade game “Battle of Rainbow”

A Witches' Council entry: a shipping log of Haven's Fuyang Logistics lists an arcade machine nobody is known to have played; HDP2-series machines have a “reward time” progress bar. Made in the Zhonggong era from the viewpoint of Sutan's Neon Sign Management Society, “Battle of Rainbow” fully simulates the Rainbow War; the Ruling Bureau banned it as too detailed and suggestive, and nobody has found a way for the Society to win. In Clue II a woman and a man in a lotus-pattern tie try it at Neon's “Banquet Hall”, and he says “I can't beat you; that ending is fixed.”

Kuzumi arrives in the Hoodoo

On 469/04/01 a new humanoid whim, Kuzumi, steps off the newly opened Hoodoo–Neon train and moves in with the scavengers. She is looking for her brother but cannot remember his name, only that they parted at Perchnest Station; she insists she was born in the Hoodoo, and the scavengers accept her as one of them since the Ten Suns era. The log's author finds a Neon artist whim of the same name, apparently working for Gulu, and suspects the 'brother' is the past self of 'our former leader', who holds custody of this level-5 whim. On 4/05 the flying-type Kuzumi herself turns up; her whim pollution is contained, and since the other side will not recall its copy, the author punches her.

Chronnection: the Mid-Level escapes

The Mazarine End reaches the Second Surface. Limbos who will not give up bring in the Ark navigator, who swaps out old data to drag Clock Town and the Mid-Level clear of the border and above the sky. Clear tries to call off the ALIGN race at the opening, but the Guru, just retired as a floor guardian, stops him.

Gino recovers the replacement data

Clutching the replacement data Broken Data Research gave him, Gino walks into the tall grass: his last task for the group is to recall the replacement data it launched earlier, deleting the 'virus' from its hosts' brains and erasing the group's tracks. Among the noise it draws in, one strand bursts open and he understands the memory inside. On the night after an earthquake, with a research institute's staff evacuated to an open field, two researchers testing radios talk about minds as distant as stars, about brain-linking shifting exploitation from labour to the body, and about how in a war fought by minds alone victory belongs to no one.

Geopelia and the Peregrinus she made

Sitting among old objects on the floor, Geopelia cannot recall her brother Peregrinus's past. In the Pixel Tower she once made a new 'Peregrinus' out of her memories of him, but he has since been polluted beyond recognition into an independent person, and she has given up keeping him in existence. Far off she sees Gino and, at the edge of the sky, the ruin of a building where her memory of Peregrinus becomes oddly clear, so she gets on the bike and follows.

The camp and Peregrinus's notebook

Gino finds Geopelia by the campfire of a snowed-in tent camp, holding the one thing she found there: Peregrinus's notebook. She asks whether her brother was here, and Gino admits they once camped here and that Peregrinus slipped off alone one night toward the distant buildings, after which their superiors ordered everyone to stay away. Geopelia wants to go and see, and Gino goes with her.

Confessions: Geopelia's grudge

Geopelia asks herself whether she resents him, just because the figure who should have appeared at the door that day was him instead of her brother, though he has been so good to her. For hundreds of years she has tried to find something in him before he awoke, even posing as 'Peregrinus' to get close, and she wonders what he thought once he remembered.

Farewell on the platform

At the edge of the sky the Mazarine is swallowing this makeshift world when a train pulls in and Peregrinus steps off to tell Geopelia it is time to go: separation lasts only a moment, people will meet again in the world called reality, and her story has only just begun. A mechanical butterfly lands on her hand, and she remembers that she will never see her brother again. He tells her to live on no matter what, then turns into countless butterflies.
