The exoplanet mirage and planet Ca-773
In the mid-21st century the ice age came early, and humanity sent out five probe ships to look for a new home, only to learn that every known Earth-like planet within a hundred light-years was a mirage caused by an error in a gravitational-wave theory. The crews that arrived found only collapsed black holes. Two years later another crew stumbled on the planet Ca-773, then lost contact with Earth because its atmosphere blocked their signals.

In the mid-21st century the ‘Steam’ engine appears and a vanguard sets out to open up five Earth-like planets. Young Gino gives his departing mother an ice-coloured lotus hairclip he made himself; she says she will be back in ten years, and ‘if I'm not back by then, come and find me’. deathMark's staves: White Horse and Decision
Two poems by deathMark. 'White Horse' (7/31): in mud and rain a crowd wails and shakes its fists at its rescuers, and a white horse stuck in the mud has its tail torn off. 'Decision' (7/32): blotting out the afterglow and restoring the dark is an ordinary thing; what is frightening is that people grow used to darkness and come to believe it is eternal.

No one can say how long it has been since they reunited, and the Vault has changed a lot, perhaps because of the Mazarine. The house is a three-storey fragment of a larger building, covered in creeper, and with no spare power cells they charge Trophon from the house's supply, since its parts are fine and it has simply run out of power. Geopelia leans in the doorway watching the black hole. The only area left to patrol lies in that direction, so Gino walks on ahead and tells her to follow on the bike once it has charged.

Gino recovers the replacement data
Clutching the replacement data Broken Data Research gave him, Gino walks into the tall grass: his last task for the group is to recall the replacement data it launched earlier, deleting the 'virus' from its hosts' brains and erasing the group's tracks. Among the noise it draws in, one strand bursts open and he understands the memory inside. On the night after an earthquake, with a research institute's staff evacuated to an open field, two researchers testing radios talk about minds as distant as stars, about brain-linking shifting exploitation from labour to the body, and about how in a war fought by minds alone victory belongs to no one.

Geopelia and the Peregrinus she made
Sitting among old objects on the floor, Geopelia cannot recall her brother Peregrinus's past. Ten unsigned signals from people each stranded in their own vault after the Tower fell. One tries to translate their loneliness and love; one cries out that they miss the Pixel Tower and its people; one opened their vault for visitors to leave their secrets in; one seals away a crystal whose purple and yellow were fixed 'objectively' inside the Tower; and one, calling themselves 'one of the instigators', insists the world of mutual understanding did exist and will never vanish, and hopes the listener will long for the Pixel Tower's return.
