Sultan Sultan, Sutan and Liandu are one person. A HAVEN dock accountant called the Magician, he runs three societies from 143, and with Peregrinus's help becomes one of the Thirteen Sacrifices, able to make endless doubles. In 242 he renames HAVEN to Neon and starts the Rainbow War; in 256 Peregrinus betrays him and he is thrown into Mazarine with the Tube Maze, and in 271 his remnants attack Lotos, causing the Great Lavabo Retreat. In 770 Geopelia and Gino beat "Battle of Rainbow" in the Tube Maze and break his chain, while his last double, Liandu, runs a hotel in Neon with Dlyro on his trail.

After taking to the sky, humans build ten heat-giving bodies. When one is lost, gravity flips and the ground tilts half a degree in three days, so they must look for a new home.

Dragon Palace Era

Humans live in the undersea cities of the Dragon Palace. Behind the rainbow city they build another wonder, Haven (the Haven of the Age of Chaos). The Dragon Palace is finally abandoned, with only Lotos kept as a power plant: an age of looking for the far shore.

  Law and morals fail in HAVEN, and hundreds of mutual-aid groups form. Sultan's earlier self, the Magician, runs three of them at once: the Neon Sign Management Society, the Witches' Council and the Rainbow Church.

  The Neon Sign Management Society meets the Witches' Council
  With HAVEN carved up among rival powers, the Neon Sign Management Society gets a reply from the Witches' Council; only Liandu backs an alliance, all the more once he learns their leader is “Peregrinus”. At the Council's base deep in a great tree's roots, a golden-eyed schoolgirl introduces herself as Peregrinus of the Witches' Council and greets Liandu with “long time no see”, a pink-haired girl of about 14–15 hiding behind her.

  An offer of power
  Someone tells Liandu that people here can wield a special power, “more than whim power”, that depends on one's nature and turns on anyone who cannot master it, so the depth of his mind must be tested first. The Pen of Butterfly Wings, dated the same day, is made from peregrine falcon tail feathers and writes only when dipped in rainwater.

  Sultan seals off HAVEN
  The First People's spy upsets the balance between the groups and Sultan comes out on top. When the government demands that HAVEN fulfil its duties as a district, Sultan insists on independence and closes HAVEN off on his own.
  Both official pages put the blockade in the 222 paragraph without a date of its own, before Haven's construction in 240. A fan sandbox also dates Neon's blockade to 222 and says the Akashic Society's activity began to fall then.

  The government takes the name HAVEN for a new floor, Haven, and from then on it rains over Neon. On 09/13 Neon residents slip into Haven and fight the builders, with heavy losses.

  The Mirrors in Mirror shows “the mirror of the mirror”; stolen again and again, it turns up in a nearby junk shop every fourteen days, with only an eagle feather left behind. Two unnamed speakers argue about giving “that guy” the mirror and sending it to a place on the fourth floor “we designed together”; one says Cronos agreed and that “he” can make himself a fulcrum, because “his name is already gone”.

  Riddle 00096: writing that must come true
  The Riddle Depository asks: if what a person writes must come true, is that person a prophet or a dangerous manipulator of causality? Broken Data Research's A and B wonder why they keep fishing up verifiable past conversations; B suggests monkeys at typewriters, or a misalignment in time. In another log a jeered-at “crazy old woman” hunts for her notebook, which reads “a magician was deceived, and turned himself into a pigeon”.

  Sultan's remnants sneak into Lotos and run its power plant in reverse. Whims pour out and Lotos is sealed. The evacuation turns into the Great Flood. Cronos stays behind alone and splits himself into five: a promise never to return, the wisdom to find it, the passion to protect it, the desire to go back, and the way to find it.

  The Endless Sea toppled and tens of thousands died; many souls broke into light before they could reach the channel of judgment, and people lost their home once again. The sea, now a personified being, waited for the one who had made and then destroyed it, and never met him: ‘next time, it will be in Lotos’.

  A tsunami and a pollution tide transform a drifting island's natives
  In the Dragon Palace Era the natives of a drifting island near HAVEN eat fish from an Atlas 'pollution tide' after a tsunami and mutate: they walk upright and invent a magic called lami-ba^daa. Some of them later break away as Tide-Welcoming Spirits.
  Dragon Palace Era (90-286), in the sea around HAVEN; the page dates nothing. The Rainbow War page has the Witches' Council already using Tide-Welcoming Spirits when the war opens (242), so the window is roughly 90-242. deathMark's own observation; the page says almost no humans had landed on the island before HAVEN's internal strife.

The Ruling Bureau replaces the Unified Government of the First People. Haven, the fifth floor, and the planet floors (6–8) are built as humans turn to space and the Moon: an age of prosperity.

  The arcade game “Battle of Rainbow”
  A Witches' Council entry: a shipping log of Haven's Fuyang Logistics lists an arcade machine nobody is known to have played; HDP2-series machines have a “reward time” progress bar. Made in the Zhonggong era from the viewpoint of Sutan's Neon Sign Management Society, “Battle of Rainbow” fully simulates the Rainbow War; the Ruling Bureau banned it as too detailed and suggestive, and nobody has found a way for the Society to win. In Clue II a woman and a man in a lotus-pattern tie try it at Neon's “Banquet Hall”, and he says “I can't beat you; that ending is fixed.”

Age of Chaos

In early spring 770 the story of the birdcage spreads on the Lunar base: break one cage and there is another. The world collapses as belief does, and the Mazarine End swallows the Pixel Tower floor by floor: an age when heaven beats people. Phigros' main story takes place in these three years.

  The town of Lost Cats
  During two days apart from Geopelia, Gino wanders a town of unknown origin, full of talking cats who call everything “too much trouble” and slow old people; an old woman tells him, “Find an empty room that doesn't exist, and what you want will be inside.” Once the two regroup, the cats tell Geopelia that the dead only live again, so it is best never to change, and Gino remarks that not getting out would be the real trouble.

  On their third day in the Tube Maze, Geopelia finds a bag of biscuits in her pocket and the two finish their last food with chili sauce. On 6/01 she keeps the maze's pretty transit sticker to decorate her Alpa pen.

The Rainbow War ends; the Guru is born

Peregrinus betrays Sultan just as he is winning, leaving the prophecy that victory belongs to no one. Sultan is captured and thrown into Mazarine along with the Tube Maze. Neon returns to the government and becomes a prison for whims, guarded by a whim, the Guru (尊师古卢).

Into the Tube Maze arcade

The citizens' hall at the heart of “79” has endless ventilation ducts that lead to rooms that do not exist, hence the name Tube Maze. As they set out, the old woman turns frenzied; Geopelia raises two transparent walls with a wave and pins her, and the woman shouts that nobody can escape, “not even you”. In a dark hall packed with free arcade machines Gino finds a game token in a drink-counter sink; in a blackout Geopelia is attacked by “soldier species” and drives them off with light blades from inside a shell of light, saying that since the Mazarine End swallowed her she remembers a lot and yet nothing.

The “empty” room

After using the token they find a white room that overlaps none of the walls around it: an “empty” room that should hold something but has lost its contents, with an intact small hole in the floor. Looking at the hole in the ceiling, Gino asks whether Alpa can track “him”. The arcade “Phigros”, logged that day, shares phigrOS's name, needs a personal terminal as its sensor, and never started.

Gino wakes in a small room with a sofa and an arcade cabinet, and a pale man with oddly clear footsteps walks in. Geopelia seems to know him and asks whether he took the game machine; he admits it and says he has not beaten it.

Out of the Tube Maze, into Neon

A rainbow leads them to the end of the Tube Maze. Gino clears the game in a few moves on a route Sutan had tried and failed; a chain on Sutan's wrist stops him going on until Geopelia buys a “Tube Maze commemorative stamp” from a vending machine and stamps the chain, which shatters. The three step out of an arcade into rainy Neon, full of signs bearing people's names; Sutan explains that each of the lower four floors (Glaciaxia, Hoodoo, Atlas, Neon) has a floor guardian, Neon's being the Guru, and calls himself “only a reflection of the past”.

Lodging at Liandu's hotel

To keep Gino and Geopelia quiet about his breach of the rules, Blanda gives them his room at Liandu's cheap hotel. Geopelia pins a dove cut-out to the note board; once they go upstairs, Liandu pulls down a few notes and wonders whether “she” missed, could not decode, or chose not to reveal the Liudaohong cipher.

The sixth target

Peregrinus hands Dlyro a yellowed photo of Liandu: the sixth target, and the last. When Dlyro points out they used to be friends, Peregrinus answers that anyone who defies the rules should expect this day, then, coughing, says “not many days left; he's back” and “he is free; we are not”.

For nights on end someone knocks on every door in the hotel; Gino follows a smell of mint cigarettes into the rain but finds no one. On 06/16 Liandu admits “he's here for me” and asks Gino to help him catch the visitor that night.

The hotel fire

At midnight Dlyro knocks again; her power cancels every attempt her target makes to call for help, and it has already cost Liandu five clones. Liandu blocks her with a fake lamp, a burning rattan chair and slick oil, escapes up the kitchen exhaust duct, and Gino follows his footprints into the rain; the hotel catches fire, Alpa carries Geopelia out, and a notice signed 素檀 later blames a faulty electric kettle.

At the Yingjie Arena: data with wrong timestamps

Liandu shows his hammer at the Yingjie Arena. The guard says a subspace export program is crawling the Neon floor, using data with wrong timestamps to slip into subspaces and steal core data; history “re-enacted”, Liandu calls it. The guard also saw Blanda that morning, though Liandu thought he had been recycled.

Blanda's “betrayal”

Voices in the dark accuse Blanda of tipping off Sutan and demand he be recycled; others say “he brought that one back”, that “the Guru is dead, before Sutan”, and that a new leader is needed who cannot be Sutan. In his own statement Blanda, a station warehouse keeper who stretched out his life to await the last guests, cries “find that rainbow, flee to the world above” and “Liudaohong is a mistake, and so are the Three Societies”.

Sutan hands “Battle of Rainbow” to Liandu

Sutan plays “Battle of Rainbow” at the arcade; the Atlas landing battle ends in mutual ruin, and Liandu drops by. Sutan mentions a kid who came last month and played him twice; Liandu concludes the kid used Rainbow Church secret arts to read Sutan's mind, having earlier read from Liandu that the clone existed, and has since vanished. Sutan says the simulations exposed a loophole that could give away their identity, that it is time to plan a way out, and entrusts the machine to Liandu: “My time is almost up.”

PhigrOS chats: Liandu is Sutan

The new captain, Dlyro, adds Geopelia as a friend and says that with the Guru missing nobody can leave; Geopelia passes on Kuzumi's word that the Rainbow Reappearance is set for the end of the month. Liandu messages Geopelia, who realises Liandu and Sutan are the same person; Liandu tells Gino the mass riots in Choroid were stirred up by Liudaohong, and Gino replies that the Witches' Council has stalled since Geopelia became its leader and that the new captain has dropped her mission. Searching by Latin name, Geopelia finds her brother's friend account, and it is the Guru's; the same day Kuzumi comes to fetch her back to the Jiaofang.

The long night: the Mazarine End nears Neon

Limbo Wiki: on 770/08/29 fear of the long night spread through Neon and the lower two films were abandoned. Wireless links across Neon are down; Gino finds Liandu at the arcade (Sutan has vanished along with the “acting Guru”), then finds Dlyro at a pop-up bar and urges her to shelter in Iris. Dlyro says “the rain has stopped”, and Gino glimpses a girl with a bow at her brow raising her hands as rainbow light bursts from her fingertips.
